Post of The Month (September)

Maisy is our Post of The Month winner voted by the community for the following post:

"Hey Shaunie,

I care. I really relate to what you have been experiencing with the house falling apart, and things not getting fixed due to general shame of the state of the house and not knowing where to begin fixing things or who to contact (you don't want to come across rogue tradesmen). Not even having adequate heating and hot water. And clutter. Everywhere. It's horrible to live in such circumstances, I know. It's hard as well when you see everyone else living a 'normal' life and yet being unable to talk about your situation."

  • Not fit for work?

So I thought I was well enough to go work. But I didn't last an hour and got called to HR for them to tell me I'm not fit for work. They said i have 4 weeks still of sick note from doctors so they can't have me. And they said i I don't seem well enough and that my supervisor and manger told her I was shaky and dont seem well.
I was off for depression so I thought it didn't matter what the doctor wrote and what i felt like but turns out I had to go home.
I think I'm fine. I'm not getting any sick pay and earning no money. My doctors aren't open on weekend so have to take tomorrow off as well. Is it possible to get a fit for work note? Otherwise im getting paid nothing for another month
I dont expect anything - to just end up disappointed. But i do not have zero hope for the future cause that has only dragged me down & brung negativity. I will just not predict the future

I'm not sure but it might be worth getting an appointment on Monday to ask about it?

Hey Shaunie, I'm sorry to hear that your work sent you home and said you were not fit for work. That's good you can see your GP on Monday, they should be able to answer any questions you may have. The gov.uk Fit For Work website here might be useful to have a look at for expert advice around this. You can also chat online here to a specialist advisor or speak to an advisor on 0800 032 6235.

Hope that helps, wishing you all the best

Thsnk you for your replies. Did get my fit to work note.
And just came back from work from first day back. I did my return to work and my manger and supervisor was really lovely and nice about it and supportive.
But when I was working a different manger came up to me (who knew why and that I was off sick from when I rang in) and he was like "haven't seen you in a while" " how was your partying" as a joke like oh yeah off for depression isnt actually being ill. I honestly was so shocked so didn't say much. Just said "what, sorry...no?" And he gave me the most dirtiest look ever. Honestly could of fucking slapped that off his face. Cause being locked up in hospital was a real jolly and a right barrel of laughs.
It's sad that people still have their on owns views on mental health and it's not being a reason to be off sick and work for.
I dont expect anything - to just end up disappointed. But i do not have zero hope for the future cause that has only dragged me down & brung negativity. I will just not predict the future

            Hey Shaunie,

Really great that your return to work went well with your manager and supervisor, it can make such a difference when people are lovely and supportive. I'm really sorry to hear about the other manager, this really isn't nice for anyone to go through. I think you've touched on a really important point about there still being a lot of stigma around mental health. On the Time To Change website, there's some blog posts from other people who have experienced mental health stigma at work which might be interesting to read.

Do keep us updated and let us know how things are going with this manager. If you feel you are being treated differently because of your mental health problem this may be discrimination and might be against the law. On the Time To Change website, they have some really useful advice on what to do, I've included some of this information below:

            • Talk to someone you trust
            • If your organisation has an Employee Assistance Programme, consider contacting them (this is an employee benefit programme that helps employees deal with personal and/or work related problems. Their services usually include assessment, short-term counselling and referral services).
            • Find out if your organisation has a mental health policy or one on bullying and harassment
            • Find out more about your rights
            • Take a look at our Get Support Page
