Are internships worth it?

If internships don’t necessarily lead to a job why do companies take on placement year students? And does the Government or university in question subsidise this for the student?

Undertaking a year’s internship (work placement) is a great way for students to experience what it would be like to work in a particular industry or profession. You’ll also be able to make contacts, obtain references and build up your CV for when you apply for jobs after graduating.

For the companies who provide internships, taking on students gives them a chance to see what potential employees could be out there. It also brings fresh, new ideas into their company, from young people who have a different outlook on life.

With regards to who subsidises the placement, this differs from university to university. If you’re considering undertaking a placement year it would be a good idea to contact your desired place of study and the companies you wish to work for to find out more.
