Will my caution affect my job application?

I've been offered a job and need to fill in a DBS form before they confirm the post. The trouble is, I received a police caution two years ago and I'm worried it'll affect my chances. Should I tell them about it before I complete the form?

The answer to your question will depend on the reasons why you got your caution and the type of job you’ve applied for. There are two types of DBS check (previously known as a CRB), Standard and Enhanced. A Standard check is for certain specified jobs, licences and entry into certain professions. An Enhanced DBS check is for jobs that include regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults.

Although a caution doesn’t count as a criminal conviction and is considered ‘spent’ immediately under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 it will probably show up in the future on DBS checks, particularly enhanced DBSs.

If you feel your caution will affect your chances of getting the job, it’s best to be honest from the start.
