"Everybody Hurts"

Contemporary beautifully crafted songs about love and emotions

Hi, I am moving all the posts from the The Mix’s sister website Madly In Love to Your Voices.

I had two points in mind when compiling my playlist. Firstly, I wanted to confirm that music - and the complicated and diverse range of feelings relating to love - are universal to all and transcend generations and time. Secondly, I wanted to showcase beautifully crafted songs that I love and, in my mind, don't often get the recognition or airplay they deserve.

Whilst countless popular love songs have been written in the past by the likes of Elvis, The Righteous Brothers and Sinead O’Connor etc., I have attempted to select contemporary songs to reflect what I, a Millennial, empathise with when it comes to dealing with today’s love and emotions.

I have chosen these songs in particular based on their collective eclecticism, their creative pushing of musical boundaries and the journey we are taken on. They touch upon a range of emotions synonymous with being in (and out of) love including lust, attraction, trust, unrequited love, rejection, regret and acceptance of reality.

Regardless of whether you're young and black (The Weeknd), female and Jewish (Haim), male and gay (Frank Ocean), or whether you love in French (Chromeo) or even assume the persona of a robot (Daft Punk), we all experience the joy and pain of how others make us feel and of what we learn about ourselves.

Whenever love completes our lives or screws us over, music is like the friend who is always there to join our celebrations or comfort us by letting us know that we're not alone. So turn up the volume a few notches, sit back, close your eyes and become better acquainted.

(N.B: Yes, Blood Orange appears in my playlist twice. I just couldn't choose between these two tracks as they're both equally amazing. Also, they’re taken from the aptly-named album "Cupid Deluxe" and the singer's girlfriend, Samantha Urbani, features on both songs. To quote Gym Class Heroes: “If that ain't love, then I don't know what love is”).
