Should I break up with my first love?

I’ve been with my boyfriend for three years and I love him very much. He’s my first ever boyfriend and we got together when I was 17. However, I can’t help thinking we’re more like best friends now, rather than ‘lovers’. I don’t really fancy him anymore – but isn’t that just normal if you’ve been with somebody a long time? I’ve met his other guy I really fancy at uni, and now I don’t know what to do. Does this mean I should end things with my boyfriend? I can’t imagine my life without him, he’s been there for me through so much. But am I just staying with him because I’m scared?

Deciding to end a relationship is never easy. And it can be much harder if you’re ending your first significant relationships, as you’ve never been through the process before. People change as they get into their twenties and you may find you’re growing apart from your partner, rather than growing together.

We have an article here called should we break up? that offers some useful tips on how to make that decision.  However, ultimately only you can decide what’s best for you right now.

What do you think? Do any of you regret ending your first relationship? Is it a case of you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone? Or do you think you’re too young to already feel like your relationship is stale? Remember, everyone’s relationships are different. There’s no right or wrong.
